Autumn planting—if the plants could choose for themselves

You have chosen to order plants for autumn planting. This makes both us and the plants happy. Autumn is the best time for planting, as plants always find it easiest to establish themselves when they are dormant.
The roots can establish themselves in peace and quiet in their new location until spring, when the plant will gain new momentum. It doesn’t matter if there is frost or a cold winter.
Deciduous plants normally handle this well. The only thing that can prevent planting is frozen ground, but as long as the soil is diggable, you can plant without any problems. The reason spring planting has become more common is likely because the enjoyment factor in the garden is higher when the spring sun arrives.
However, everything done in the autumn creates more enjoyment and easier work in the spring. Upon delivery in the autumn, the plants may look a bit withered, just as established plants begin to take on autumn colors or shed their leaves, but: No need to worry—it’s exactly as it should be!
Plants shed their leaves
In autumn, most deciduous plants go dormant and shed all their leaves. Many perennials die back completely above ground. The process can start as early as September, when trees and shrubs drop their inner leaves. This is to focus on the final growth at the very tips of the branches and to build up strength for next year.
Autumn leaves are not as beautiful
“Old” leaves that budded early in the season become more sensitive to damage in the autumn, losing their color and turning yellow. The leaves have been around for a while, and there may have been a storm or perhaps a frosty night during the autumn.
From mid-October, leaf shedding begins in earnest. The plants may appear a bit withered, with holes in the leaves or brown leaf edges, but as mentioned… No need to worry—it’s exactly as it should be!

Hedge plants
When hedge plants are lifted for autumn planting, leaf shedding can be accelerated. The plants may look tattered and leaves may be brown and sometimes in a slight state of decay after delivery; this may look a bit bad but is completely natural.
Even if established plants in the local area still have green leaves, your plants have already prepared for autumn and winter. In autumn, most plants shed their leaves. There is no cause for concern; in the spring, the plants will sprout lovely new leaves as soon as the weather permits.
Plants harvested or planted in the autumn can be a bit uncertain about when to start growing in the spring. An autumn-planted plant may therefore sometimes wait a little longer to sprout new shoots during the first season after planting. This is also completely normal, so wait patiently for your plants to start growing.
